I find it quite strange that a joke that can work well in one language just sounds stupid in another. Every language has it’s own style of humor I guess. As an example, below are two jokes, both rather crude, the first is a translation from polish, the second is an english joke. Polish humor has definetly got a different feel about it than english humor.
Translated Polish joke:
A young couple, soon to be married meet with a priest to discuss how much they should pay for the marriage ceremony.
The young man says, “How much should I pay?” to which the priest replies, “Look at the woman you chose and decide for yourself how much you wish to offer.”
The man reaches inside his wallet and pulls out $100 and hands it to the priest. The priest then reaches inside his wallet and gives the man $50 change.
